What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small posts, usually made from titanium, that substitute the root of your tooth. Once the implant has adhered to your jawbone, Dr. Bram attaches an abutment and a dental crown, or replacement tooth.

The implant is sturdy, permanent, and almost indistinguishable from your natural teeth. Implants are an alternative to conventional dentures, which aren’t as comfortable or attractive as your natural teeth.

The titanium implant mimics your tooth root. It integrates into the bone, stimulating continued bone strength. When you lose teeth and don’t stimulate the jawbone, the supporting bone breaks down and leads to changes in your jaw shape.

Who is a candidate for dental implants?

For dental implants, you need to have a healthy mouth, free of gum disease, and ample bone in your jaw. If you do need treatment for gum disease, Dr. Bram offers this prior to you receiving the implant.

He may also recommend a bone graft if your jaw isn’t generous enough to hold the implant. A bone graft is a minor surgical procedure in which Dr. Bram adds donor bone to your jaw into areas where there is bone recession.

Anyone missing teeth can benefit from dental implants. Implants can replace one or more missing teeth. They can also anchor implant-supported dentures, which replace your entire upper or lower row of teeth.

How long does it take to get dental implants?

Getting dental implants is a multi-step process that takes several months. Dr. Bram starts your process with comprehensive digital X-rays and imaging scans. He uses these scans to put together your customized plan.

When you come in for implant surgery, you’re placed under sedation and local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. Dr. Bram then creates an access hole in your gums and inserts the implant into your jawbone.

Once the implant fuses to your jawbone, typically after six to 12 weeks, you return for placement of the abutment and any customized crowns or dentures. These restorations match the coloration and sheen of your natural teeth.
