Dental implants have made huge advancements in the past few years. However, the process of using various materials to replace missing teeth has been around for thousands of years, dating all the way back to China in 2000 BC. The fascinating history of implant dentistry has led to the modern procedure used to restore missing teeth today. Dr. Keith Bram strives to only use the latest techniques to provide you with a gorgeous new smile.

The Beginning of Implant Dentistry

Humans have been using various material and methods to replace missing teeth for thousands of years. In 2000 BC the Chinese used carbed bamboo to replace missing teeth, marking the earliest version of dental implants.

As early as 1000 BC, the Egyptians began to use metals to restore lost teeth, advancing the materials used in the procedure. In 500 BC different cultures throughout the world started using animal bones and ivory to create fake teeth, giving more aesthetically pleasing results and exploration into different stabilization techniques started.

By 300 AD, the Phoenicians created one of the first dental bridges by carving teeth from ivory and securing into neighboring teeth with gold wire. Over the centuries, the materials used to replace missing teeth evolved to eventually include animal and human teeth. By the 1500 -1800s, human teeth from less fortunate donors and cadavers became the standard prosthetic for wealthy patients seeking a tooth replacement.

Modern Implant Dentistry

Modern dental implants as we know them came into popularity in 1913, when platinum gold posts were used to support crowns. By the 1950s, dentists turned to a screw-like design to help make insertion of the post easier. Finally, in the 1960’s the first titanium post was used as an implant post in a patient with a jaw deformity marking the start of what we consider dental implant surgery today.

Since the mid-1960’s technological advancements have continued to drive the improvements to implant procedures. Today’s implants are transforming the restorative dental industry have become the gold standard for replacing missing teeth.
